Every year, Red Herring's list of the technology industry's top 100 companies surprises the business world. This year is no different. The list once again sets the standard as the industry's definitive list of private technology companies impacting the market place, revealing where new fortunes are likely to be made.

No doubt, the market has changed significantly over the past few years and Red Herring's approach in evaluating companies has evolved to reflect the new business realities.

Over the last few months, Red Herring editors have spent hundreds of hours talking with experts and carefully examining over 600 private global companies' business models, financials, and management teams. Red Herring's unique approach of using both qualitative measurements and quantitative business metrics to assess a company's potential sets it apart from other lists.

This year's selection process was weighted to reflect the reality of survival in today's challenging marketplace: generating revenues, establishing a strong customer base and equally strong industry partnerships. What's more, it has significantly broadened its geographic scope across the globe to include companies from 10 countries, including China, Japan, Israel, the U.K. and Germany.
